Who succeeded Queen Victoria as British monarch in 1901?

The story behind the answer

Queen Victoria was succeeded by Edward VII as British monarch in 1901.

Edward was Victoria and Prince Albert’s eldest son, born Albert Edward in 1841. He became king when Victoria died on 22 January 1901, after her exceptionally long reign of more than 63 years. His accession marked the end of the Victorian era.

Edward VII reigned until 1910 and was also Emperor of India. His coronation was delayed until 9 August 1902 because he developed appendicitis shortly before the planned ceremony. He was succeeded by his son, George V.

A common mix-up is confusing Edward VII with Edward VIII, who came later and abdicated in 1936. George VI followed Edward VIII, while George V was Edward VII’s immediate successor—not his predecessor.
