Douglas MacArthur signed Japan's surrender document for the Allied nations in 1945.

MacArthur was Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers and presided over the ceremony aboard USS Missouri. He signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender on behalf of the Allied powers, using two pens that were later preserved as historical artifacts.

After MacArthur signed, Admiral Chester W. Nimitz signed as the United States representative. Representatives of China, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, Australia, Canada, France, the Netherlands, and New Zealand then signed for their governments.

MacArthur had commanded Allied forces in the Southwest Pacific Area and had returned to the Philippines in 1944 after earlier promising to return. Following the surrender, he directed the Allied occupation of Japan and became a central figure in Japan's postwar political reconstruction.
