Who scored the first penalty-shot goal in Stanley Cup Final history, in 2006?
Answer
Chris Pronger
Answer
Chris Pronger
Chris Pronger scored the first penalty-shot goal in Stanley Cup Final history during the 2006 Final. In Game 1, the Edmonton Oilers defenseman converted against Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward.
The penalty shot was awarded after Carolina defenseman Niclas Wallin illegally covered the puck inside his own goal crease. Pronger’s goal helped Edmonton build a 3–0 lead, although Carolina eventually won the game 5–4.
This record is easy to confuse with other notable goals from the same series. Fernando Pisani scored the first short-handed overtime goal in Final history in Game 5, while Rod Brind’Amour scored Carolina’s late winning goal in the opener.
The 2006 series was the first Stanley Cup Final after the 2004–05 lockout season was canceled. Carolina won the championship in seven games, defeating an Edmonton team that had entered the playoffs as the eighth seed in the Western Conference.
