Who says 'No capes!'?

The story behind the answer

Who says “No capes!”? Edna Mode says “No capes!” in The Incredibles.

Edna is the brilliant fashion designer who creates specialized superhero suits. She delivers the warning while explaining why capes are dangerous: they can catch on aircraft, machinery, or other hazards and pull a superhero into serious trouble. Her presentation includes a montage of former clients whose cape-related accidents demonstrate the point.

The line became one of the film’s most memorable pieces of dialogue because it turns a familiar superhero costume feature into a practical design flaw. Edna’s tiny stature, blunt manner, technical expertise, and exaggerated confidence make the scene funny, but her advice is also genuinely useful. The Parr family’s new suits are designed to withstand extreme action without using capes.

Brad Bird both wrote and directed The Incredibles and provides Edna’s voice. Lily Tomlin was initially considered for the role, but Bird ultimately performed it himself. Edna is not a Parr family member, and the line is not spoken by Frozone, Elastigirl, or Mr. Incredible.
