Who returned as showrunner for The Bear's fifth and final season?

The story behind the answer

Christopher Storer returned as showrunner for The Bear’s fifth and final season.

Storer is the series creator and one of its central creative forces. He developed the show around Carmy Berzatto, a talented chef trying to keep his late brother’s Chicago sandwich shop alive, and directed many of its defining episodes. For season 5, he again served as showrunner and directed seven of the eight episodes.

The showrunner oversees the series’ day-to-day creative direction, coordinating writing, production, tone, and often major directing decisions. That role is distinct from other important collaborators: Hiro Murai directed earlier episodes and is an executive producer, while Joanna Calo served as a co-showrunner on earlier seasons. Rene Gube was among the season 5 writers and also appeared on screen as Rene.

Storer’s return mattered particularly because the fifth season was designed as the conclusion of the series. It premiered all eight episodes on June 25, 2026, with the story following Sydney, Richie, Natalie, and the restaurant team after Carmy announced that he was leaving the food industry.
