Who received the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize?
Answer
Martin Luther King Jr.
Answer
Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. received the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize.
The Nobel Committee recognized King's nonviolent struggle for civil rights for African Americans in the United States. At age 35, he became the youngest recipient of the Peace Prize at that time. He donated the prize money to the civil-rights movement.
King was a Baptist minister and a leading figure in the American civil-rights movement. He helped organize the Montgomery bus boycott, led the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech during the 1963 March on Washington.
King accepted the award in Oslo on 10 December 1964. He was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, on 4 April 1968. Nelson Mandela and Frederik Willem de Klerk shared the 1993 Peace Prize, while Desmond Tutu received it in 1984, so these names are sometimes incorrectly linked to the 1964 award.
