Who recaptured Jerusalem from the Crusaders in 1187? Saladin recaptured Jerusalem from the Crusaders in 1187.
Saladin, the Muslim sultan who founded the Ayyubid dynasty, united Egypt and much of Syria under his rule. His growing power allowed him to challenge the Crusader states, which had controlled Jerusalem since the First Crusade captured the city in 1099.
The decisive turning point came after Saladin defeated the Crusader army at the Battle of Hattin on 4 July 1187. That victory opened the way for him to seize much of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. Jerusalem itself was besieged from 20 September to 2 October, when Balian of Ibelin negotiated its surrender.
Saladin is often confused with later Muslim leaders such as Baibars, who fought the Crusader states in the 13th century. Saladin captured Jerusalem, but he did not destroy the entire Crusader presence in the Levant; coastal strongholds, including Acre, remained in Christian hands for years afterward.
