Ōtani has voiced Pikachu since the anime began in 1997. Unlike many Pokémon characters, Pikachu generally says its own name in the series rather than speaking in ordinary human sentences, so the voice performance relies heavily on pitch, rhythm, emotion, and timing.

She also voices Pikachu in many Pokémon games, films, and other productions. The recognizable “Pika-Pika” calls became one of the franchise’s most identifiable sounds and helped make Pikachu a global mascot.

Rica Matsumoto, who voices Ash in Japanese, is sometimes mistakenly credited because Ash and Pikachu are closely associated.
