Who provided the voice of Snow White?

Adriana Caselotti provided the voice of Snow White in Disney’s 1937 animated film. Her youthful, soprano-like voice became one of the defining sounds of the character.

Caselotti auditioned in 1934 after her father, a Los Angeles vocal coach, was contacted by Disney casting director Roy Scott. Walt Disney reportedly wanted a voice that sounded young and untrained rather than like an established adult star. Caselotti was eventually cast in 1935 and recorded across 44 days of sessions, receiving $20 per day for a total of $970.

The role is sometimes confused with Mary Costa, who voiced Princess Aurora in Sleeping Beauty, or Ilene Woods, who voiced Cinderella. Judy Garland was also not Snow White’s voice; she was the star of The Wizard of Oz. Thelma Hubbard supplied some screams in the forest-flight sequence, but Caselotti remains the principal and canonical voice of Snow White in the original English-language film.
