Who provided the singing voice for Princess Jasmine in Aladdin?

The story behind the answer

Lea Salonga provided the singing voice for Princess Jasmine in Aladdin.

Salonga recorded Jasmine’s singing for the 1992 animated film, including “A Whole New World,” her duet with Aladdin. Linda Larkin supplied Jasmine’s speaking voice, so the character’s dialogue and songs were performed by two different actresses. That split is a common source of confusion when quizzes ask who “voiced” Jasmine without specifying singing or speaking.

Salonga was already internationally known for originating Kim in the musical Miss Saigon. Disney casting personnel heard her perform and invited her to record a demonstration of “A Whole New World,” which led to her being cast as Jasmine’s singing voice. She later provided the singing voice of Fa Mulan in Mulan (1998), making her closely associated with two major Disney heroines.

Jodi Benson and Paige O’Hara are also famous Disney singers, but Benson is associated with Ariel and O’Hara with Belle. Linda Larkin is the correct name for Jasmine’s spoken dialogue, not her singing.
