Who produced The Who's 1965 single 'My Generation'?

Shel Talmy produced The Who’s 1965 single “My Generation.”

Talmy was an American record producer who became a major figure in Britain’s 1960s recording scene. Before working with The Who, he had produced the Kinks’ breakthrough “You Really Got Me,” a connection that helped attract Pete Townshend, who admired that record’s raw guitar sound. Talmy subsequently produced several of The Who’s early recordings.

“My Generation” was recorded at IBC Studios in London on 13 October 1965 and released by Brunswick later that month. Talmy’s production helped preserve the band’s hard-edged attack while presenting it in a commercially powerful studio recording. He also produced The Who’s debut album, *My Generation*.

The other names can cause confusion because Chris Stamp and Kit Lambert were central figures in The Who’s management and later production history, while Glyn Johns worked as an engineer on many important recordings. None, however, is the credited producer of this 1965 single. Talmy’s association with the band later ended in a legal dispute over recording rights and royalties.
