Who produced Metallica's The Black Album?

The story behind the answer

Bob Rock produced Metallica’s The Black Album, working alongside James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich as credited co-producers.

Rock was known for his work with major rock acts, and Metallica had been impressed by his production on Mötley Crüe’s Dr. Feelgood. The band initially hesitated about hiring him, but ultimately decided that his approach could help them make their strongest record.

The sessions were not easy. Rock pushed Metallica to record collaboratively as a full band instead of building parts separately. He also encouraged harmonic vocals and demanded repeated takes until the performances matched the desired feel. These methods led to frequent disagreements, but they helped create the album’s polished, powerful sound.

The Black Album was Rock’s first Metallica production. He later worked with the band on Load, Reload, and Garage Inc., and he performed bass on St. Anger after Jason Newsted’s departure. His partnership with Metallica became one of the defining producer-band relationships in the group’s history.
