Who produced Metallica's 1991 album Metallica?

The story behind the answer

Bob Rock produced Metallica's 1991 album Metallica.

Rock was a Canadian record producer and engineer known for working with major rock and metal acts. Before Metallica, he had produced albums by bands including Mötley Crüe and Bon Jovi. His appointment represented a change from the band's earlier records, which had largely been produced by Flemming Rasmussen.

Metallica worked with Rock at One on One Recording Studios in Los Angeles. The sessions were demanding, and the band and producer reportedly clashed over performance, arrangement, and recording methods. Rock pushed the musicians toward a more unified band sound and a clearer, more forceful production style.

The album's credits also list James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich as co-producers. Rock continued working with Metallica on later projects, including Load, Reload, and Garage Inc. A common mix-up is to credit Rasmussen, who produced several earlier Metallica albums rather than The Black Album.
