Who printed the early Dutch cookbook Een notabel boecxken van cokeryen?

The story behind the answer

Thomas van der Noot printed the early Dutch cookbook Een notabel boecxken van cokeryen.

Van der Noot was a Brussels publisher and author from a prominent family who worked in the early sixteenth century. He is credited with publishing the earliest printed cookbook in the Dutch language, generally dated to around 1514. The title can be translated as “A Remarkable Book on Cooking.”

The book belongs to the formative period of European printed cookbooks, when recipes that had circulated in manuscript or household traditions began reaching a wider reading public. Its appearance also reflects Brussels’s role as an important commercial and cultural center in the Low Countries.

The question can cause confusion because several famous culinary figures are linked to cookbook history. Curnonsky was a twentieth-century French food writer, Amelia Simmons wrote the 1796 American Cookery, and Antonin Carême was a celebrated French chef and cookbook author of the nineteenth century. None was connected to this early Dutch publication.
