Who plays Varang, leader of the Mangkwan, in Avatar: Fire and Ash?

The story behind the answer

Oona Chaplin plays Varang, the leader of the Mangkwan clan, in Avatar: Fire and Ash. Varang leads a Na'vi people associated with volcanic environments and the film's Ash People.

Chaplin joined the Avatar sequels during their long development. James Cameron described Varang as a hardened leader whose people had endured extraordinary hardship, shaping her into someone willing to do whatever is necessary for her clan—even actions others would consider evil.

The role is part of the film's expansion of Pandora beyond the reef-dwelling Metkayina introduced in Avatar: The Way of Water. Varang and the Mangkwan provide a different cultural and environmental perspective on the Na'vi, rather than simply repeating the conflicts of the earlier films.

A common mix-up is confusing Chaplin with Kate Winslet, who plays Ronal, a Metkayina character, or Bailey Bass, who plays Tsireya. Edie Falco, meanwhile, portrays the human military figure General Frances Ardmore.
