Who plays the character of Mr. Carson?

Jim Carter plays Mr. Carson in Downton Abbey.

The character is Charles “Charlie” Carson, the dignified butler who oversees the male servants, pantry, wine cellar, and dining room at Downton. Carson has worked at the estate since he was young, beginning as a junior footman and rising to become butler by 1890. His long service makes him one of the household’s strongest links to Downton’s past.

Carson is known for his strict standards, formal manners, and deep loyalty to the Crawley family. Although he often resists social and technological change, he has a warmer, almost fatherly side toward the servants and a special affection for Lady Mary, who was the first child born at Downton during his tenure. A common mix-up is confusing Carson with John Bates, played by Brendan Coyle; Bates is Lord Grantham’s valet, while Carson runs the household staff.

Carter reprised the role in the Downton Abbey films, extending Carson’s story beyond the original television series.
