Who plays the character of Isobel Crawley?

Penelope Wilton plays Isobel Crawley in Downton Abbey. Her character is the widowed mother of Matthew Crawley and becomes one of the series’ strongest advocates for modern, liberal and charitable ideas.

Isobel arrives at Downton after Matthew becomes the heir to the estate. Her practical outlook frequently clashes with the traditions defended by Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess. Their arguments provide much of the show’s wit, but the rivalry gradually develops into a genuine friendship grounded in mutual respect.

Before her marriage, Wilton built a distinguished career in British theatre and television. She was widely known for the BBC sitcom Ever Decreasing Circles and later played Harriet Jones in Doctor Who. Downton Abbey introduced her to a large international audience, and she appeared throughout all six television series.

The character’s name can become more complicated later: Isobel becomes Baroness Merton after marrying Richard Grey. The actress remains Penelope Wilton, however, and is the canonical answer to the casting question.
