Who plays Dr. Norm Spellman in Avatar: Fire and Ash?

Joel David Moore plays Dr. Norm Spellman in Avatar: Fire and Ash. Moore reprises the role of the human scientist who becomes one of the key human allies of the Na’vi on Pandora.

Norm Spellman was introduced in James Cameron’s Avatar (2009) as a xenobotanist and member of the Avatar Program. He pilots a genetically matched Na’vi avatar to conduct scientific research and learns to communicate with the Omaticaya. After the human attack on Pandora, Norm rejects the Resources Development Administration’s campaign and supports Jake Sully and the Na’vi.

The character’s name can be confused with other returning scientists. Dileep Rao plays Dr. Max Patel, another former Avatar Program scientist, while Jemaine Clement portrays marine biologist Ian Garvin. Giovanni Ribisi returns as the corporate figure Parker Selfridge. Moore has therefore been part of the Avatar ensemble from the original film, even though Norm is not the franchise’s central protagonist.
