Who plays Captain America in "Captain America: The First Avenger"?

The story behind the answer

Chris Evans plays Captain America in Captain America: The First Avenger. He portrays Steve Rogers, a physically frail but determined young man who becomes the super-soldier Captain America during World War II.

The 2011 film tells the origin of Rogers’s transformation. After being rejected repeatedly from military service, he is selected for the Strategic Scientific Reserve’s experiment using the Super-Soldier Serum. The procedure gives him exceptional strength, speed and endurance, but his defining quality remains his courage and sense of duty.

The film was directed by Joe Johnston and set largely in the 1940s. It also introduces important characters including Peggy Carter, played by Hayley Atwell, and the villainous Johann Schmidt, or the Red Skull, played by Hugo Weaving. Captain America’s circular shield becomes his signature weapon.

Evans continued playing Steve Rogers in later Marvel Cinematic Universe films, including The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. A common confusion is that other actors have played Captain America in different adaptations, but Chris Evans is the actor associated with the MCU’s original film version.
