Who played Thelma Lou on the show? Betty Lynn played Thelma Lou on The Andy Griffith Show.

Thelma Lou was Barney Fife’s girlfriend and one of Mayberry’s recurring residents. Although she was an important part of Barney’s romantic storylines, she appeared in only 26 episodes, making her a semiregular rather than a full-time cast member.

Lynn joined the series while also appearing in other productions, including Texas John Slaughter. The character was gradually dropped after Don Knotts left the show and Barney Fife moved away from Mayberry. Thelma Lou returned in the 1986 reunion film Return to Mayberry, where she and Barney finally married.

A common mix-up is confusing Betty Lynn with Frances Bavier, who played Aunt Bee, or Hope Summers, who played Clara Edwards. Lynn later moved to Mount Airy, North Carolina, closely associated with Andy Griffith and the fictional Mayberry.
