Who played the title character in the television series House M.D.?

The story behind the answer

Hugh Laurie played the title character, Dr. Gregory House, in the television series House M.D.

Laurie is an English actor, musician, and author who became internationally known for portraying the brilliant but abrasive diagnostician. House was his first major American television leading role, and the performance earned him multiple award nominations and two Golden Globe wins.

Before House M.D., Laurie was widely recognized in the United Kingdom for comedy work with Stephen Fry, including A Bit of Fry & Laurie and Jeeves and Wooster. His casting also became a notable example of an English actor convincingly using an American accent.

Robert Sean Leonard played James Wilson, while Lisa Edelstein played Lisa Cuddy. Those supporting roles are sometimes confused with the title role, but Laurie is the actor credited as Dr. House throughout the series.
