Who played the role of Goober Pyle?
Answer
George Lindsey
Answer
George Lindsey
George Lindsey played the role of Goober Pyle on The Andy Griffith Show. Lindsey joined the sitcom in 1964, portraying the kindly, slow-witted mechanic who became one of Mayberry's best-known supporting characters.
Goober first appeared as Goober Beasley, but the character was later renamed Goober Pyle to establish a connection with Gomer Pyle, his cousin. Gomer was played by Jim Nabors, who left The Andy Griffith Show when his character received the spin-off Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. Lindsey's Goober helped fill the comic role left by Gomer's departure.
Goober worked at Wally's Filling Station and was known for his work clothes, high-waisted trousers, whoopee cap, and enthusiastic manner. Although often portrayed as foolish, he was also cheerful, good-natured, and surprisingly capable as a mechanic.
Lindsey continued playing Goober after The Andy Griffith Show, appearing on Mayberry R.F.D. and later becoming a longtime cast member of Hee Haw. Jim Nabors is the common mix-up: he played Gomer Pyle, not Goober Pyle.
