Who played Spock in the original series?

The story behind the answer

Leonard Nimoy played Spock in the original Star Trek series. Nimoy portrayed the half-human, half-Vulcan science officer and first officer of the USS Enterprise throughout the series’ run from 1966 to 1969.

Spock’s character was defined by his effort to reconcile his Vulcan commitment to logic with his human emotional heritage. His calm reasoning made him an essential counterpoint to Captain James T. Kirk’s instinctive leadership and Dr. Leonard McCoy’s passionate medical perspective. Together, the three characters formed the show’s core trio.

Nimoy first developed Spock during Star Trek’s early pilot productions, including “The Cage” and “Where No Man Has Gone Before.” He continued playing the character in Star Trek: The Animated Series, the first six Star Trek films, and later appearances in The Next Generation and the 2009 film reboot.

A frequent confusion is mixing up the actors who played the Enterprise’s other senior officers. William Shatner played Kirk, DeForest Kelley played Dr. McCoy, and George Takei played helmsman Hikaru Sulu. Nimoy’s portrayal made Spock one of science fiction’s most enduring characters.
