Who played Shaggy in the 2002 live-action film?
Answer
Matthew Lillard
Answer
Matthew Lillard
Matthew Lillard played Shaggy Rogers in the 2002 live-action film *Scooby-Doo*.
The film was Warner Bros.' first theatrical live-action adaptation of the animated franchise. Directed by Raja Gosnell and written by James Gunn, it reunited Mystery Inc. as young adults investigating supernatural events on Spooky Island. Lillard appeared alongside Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne, and Linda Cardellini as Velma.
Lillard's performance was widely recognized for capturing Shaggy's nervous mannerisms, comic timing, appetite, and distinctive speech patterns. A common mix-up is confusing the actor with Casey Kasem, who voiced Shaggy in the original animated series for many years. Lillard did not provide the character's voice in the 2002 film's live-action scenes, but he later became one of Shaggy's principal voice actors.
After Casey Kasem retired from the role, Lillard began voicing Shaggy in animated productions in 2010. He also returned for the 2004 sequel, *Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed*, making the character one of his signature roles.
