Who played Prince Andrei Bolkonsky in the 2016 BBC War and Peace miniseries?
Answer
James Norton
Answer
James Norton
James Norton played Prince Andrei Bolkonsky in the 2016 BBC War and Peace miniseries.
The six-part adaptation was written by Andrew Davies and directed by Tom Harper. It follows Tolstoy’s intertwined aristocratic families during the Napoleonic Wars, focusing especially on Pierre Bezukhov, Natasha Rostova and Prince Andrei. Norton’s Andrei is a thoughtful, disillusioned nobleman who seeks purpose beyond the superficial social world of imperial Russian society.
Prince Andrei’s storyline moves between military duty, family conflict and romance. He serves in the Russian army, experiences the brutality and confusion of battle, and becomes closely connected with Natasha Rostova. His relationship with Natasha is one of the adaptation’s major emotional threads, alongside Pierre’s search for moral and spiritual direction.
The distractors belong to the same production but played different roles. Paul Dano portrayed Pierre Bezukhov, Aneurin Barnard played Boris Drubetskoy, and Tom Burke was not the actor playing Andrei in this miniseries. The series also featured Lily James as Natasha, Jim Broadbent as Prince Nikolai Bolkonsky and Gillian Anderson as Anna Pavlovna Scherer.
The BBC drama premiered in the United Kingdom in 2016 and was broadcast internationally. Norton’s performance helped make the adaptation’s version of Andrei recognizable to viewers who had not previously read Tolstoy’s novel.
