Who played Margo Channing in All About Eve?

The story behind the answer

Who played Margo Channing in All About Eve? Bette Davis played Margo Channing. Margo is a celebrated but aging Broadway star whose life and career are disrupted when Eve Harrington, an apparently devoted young fan, enters her inner circle. Davis gives the character a mixture of theatrical force, insecurity, wit, and vulnerability.

Released in 1950, All About Eve was written and directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz and produced by Darryl F. Zanuck. Anne Baxter played Eve, while George Sanders portrayed the sharp-tongued critic Addison DeWitt. The film was adapted from Mary Orr’s short story “The Wisdom of Eve,” though Orr did not receive a screen credit.

Viewers sometimes confuse Davis’s role with Baxter’s because Eve is the title character and drives much of the plot. Davis, however, is Margo Channing, the established star whose position is threatened by Eve’s ambition. The film received 14 Academy Award nominations, a record at the time, and won six, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Sanders.
