Answer
Nichelle Nichols
Who played Lieutenant Uhura? Nichelle Nichols played Lieutenant Uhura in the original Star Trek series. Nichols portrayed the USS Enterprise communications officer from 1966 through 1969, then reprised the role in six original-cast Star Trek films and the animated series. The character’s first name, Nyota, became widely established later in Star Trek material.
Uhura was significant because she was a Black woman serving as a senior bridge officer on a major American television series. Her role placed her alongside Captain Kirk, Spock, and Dr. McCoy as a regular member of the command crew. Nichols initially considered leaving the show, but Martin Luther King Jr. reportedly encouraged her to remain because the role had important cultural influence.
Nichols also sang in several episodes, including “Charlie X” and “The Changeling.” In “Plato’s Stepchildren,” Uhura and Kirk shared a kiss that is often cited as a landmark moment in U.S. television history, though earlier interracial kisses have also been identified. Nichols later supported NASA recruitment and inspired astronauts including Mae Jemison.
