Who played Lane Pryce on Mad Men?

The story behind the answer

Jared Harris played Lane Pryce on Mad Men. Lane is introduced as a British financial executive working for the international advertising firm Putnam, Powell & Lowe before becoming involved with Sterling Cooper.

He first appears in the third-season premiere, “Out of Town,” set in 1963. After Sterling Cooper is acquired, Lane becomes the agency’s financial officer and later helps Don Draper, Roger Sterling, Bert Cooper, and others establish Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce.

Lane’s storyline is often remembered for its tension between professional ambition and personal pressure. He wants the respect and independence that come with partnership, but struggles with debt, family expectations, and his identity as an Englishman adapting to American business culture.

Harris received a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for the role in 2012. A common mix-up is confusing Lane with Robert Morse’s Bert Cooper or Harry Hamlin’s Jim Cutler, both significant Sterling Cooper-related characters.
