Who played James Wilson, House’s oncologist friend, in House M.D.?

The story behind the answer

Robert Sean Leonard played James Wilson, House’s oncologist friend, in House M.D.

Wilson is one of the show’s most important recurring characters. As head of oncology at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital, he frequently provides medical expertise while also challenging House’s decisions and softening the consequences of House’s behavior. Their friendship is a central relationship across the series.

Leonard was born Robert Lawrence Leonard in Westwood, New Jersey. He became known for films such as Dead Poets Society before joining House’s main cast. His theater work was also significant: he won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for The Invention of Love in 2001.

The character is sometimes mistaken for one of House’s diagnostic fellows because he spends so much time with the team. Wilson is actually an oncologist and department head. Omar Epps played Eric Foreman, Peter Jacobson played Chris Taub, and Andre Braugher was not a principal House cast member.
