Who played Jake Sully in James Cameron’s 2009 film Avatar, set largely on Pandora?

The story behind the answer

Sam Worthington played Jake Sully in James Cameron’s 2009 film Avatar, set largely on Pandora. Jake is a former Marine who travels to the moon as part of the Avatar Program, using a genetically engineered Na’vi body to interact with the local population.

The film follows Jake as he becomes increasingly sympathetic to the Na’vi and to Pandora’s interconnected ecosystem. Worthington’s performance combines scenes as the human Jake with scenes in which he portrays Jake’s digitally created avatar. Zoe Saldana played Neytiri, Jake’s principal Na’vi ally and eventual partner.

Avatar became a major international box-office success and won three Academy Awards. Its visual effects, production design and cinematography were particularly prominent. The film’s setting, Pandora, is fictional and should not be confused with the real Saturnian moon or the asteroid that share the name.
