Who played George Washington in the original Broadway cast of Hamilton?
Answer
Christopher Jackson
Answer
Christopher Jackson
Christopher Jackson played George Washington in the original Broadway cast of Hamilton.
Jackson joined the principal Broadway company as General George Washington, the Revolutionary War commander who becomes the first president of the United States. His performance presents Washington as a disciplined military leader and an important mentor to Alexander Hamilton. Jackson also performed the role in the filmed stage production released on Disney+ in 2020.
Hamilton, with a score by Lin-Manuel Miranda, began Broadway previews in July 2015 and officially opened at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in August 2015. The musical dramatizes events from Hamilton’s life using styles including hip-hop, R&B, soul, and traditional musical theater. Its original cast recording became a major commercial success and won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
The role is sometimes confused with other prominent original-cast parts. Leslie Odom Jr. played Aaron Burr, Daveed Diggs played Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson, and Jonathan Groff played King George III. Jackson’s Washington is therefore a distinct role within the ensemble.
