Who played Dr. Leonard 'Bones' McCoy?
Answer
DeForest Kelley
Answer
DeForest Kelley
Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy was played by DeForest Kelley. Kelley portrayed the Enterprise chief medical officer throughout Star Trek: The Original Series, making McCoy one part of the show’s central Kirk–Spock–McCoy trio.
McCoy first appeared in the broadcast episode “The Man Trap” in 1966. His role was more than simply providing medical explanations: McCoy represented compassion and human instinct, often balancing Captain Kirk’s command decisions and challenging Spock’s strict logic. Kelley’s performance gave the character his warmth, impatience, humor, and recurring catchphrase, “He’s dead, Jim.”
Kelley had already worked in film and television, particularly in Westerns, before joining Star Trek. He continued playing McCoy in the animated series, the first six theatrical Star Trek films, and a cameo as the elderly Admiral McCoy in Star Trek: The Next Generation’s premiere, “Encounter at Farpoint.”
A common mix-up is confusing the actor with the character: Leonard McCoy is the fictional doctor, while DeForest Kelley is the actor who originated the role. Karl Urban later played McCoy in the reboot film series.
