Who played Captain Christopher Pike in 'The Cage'?

The story behind the answer

Jeffrey Hunter played Captain Christopher Pike in “The Cage.” Pike was the original captain of the USS Enterprise in Star Trek’s first pilot, filmed in 1964.

“The Cage” was set in 2254 and introduced several elements that became central to the franchise, including the Enterprise, Spock, and the Talosians. Hunter’s Pike is captured on Talos IV, where powerful illusions test his desire to escape command and return to ordinary life.

Hunter declined to continue as Pike after NBC requested a second pilot, choosing to focus on his film career. William Shatner then became the series lead as Captain James T. Kirk. Pike later returned to the story through archival footage and a stand-in in “The Menagerie,” because Hunter could not reprise the role.

A common mix-up is confusing the actors who played Pike in later productions: Sean Kenney portrayed the injured Pike in “The Menagerie,” while Anson Mount played a later version of the character in “Discovery” and “Strange New Worlds.”
