Who painted the fresco 'The Last Judgment' in the Sistine Chapel?

The story behind the answer

Michelangelo painted the fresco The Last Judgment on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel. He worked on it from 1536 to 1541, more than two decades after completing the chapel's famous ceiling.

The immense fresco depicts the Second Coming of Christ and the final judgment of humanity. More than 300 figures fill the composition, with the saved rising on one side and the damned descending toward punishment on the other. Christ appears at the center, surrounded by saints and other biblical figures.

The work was commissioned under Pope Clement VII and completed during the pontificate of Paul III. It caused controversy because of its muscular nude figures; later artists added draperies to cover some bodies. This painting should not be confused with the Sistine Chapel ceiling, which Michelangelo painted between 1508 and 1512.
