Who painted the famous 1851 artwork titled Washington Crossing the Delaware?

The story behind the answer

Emanuel Leutze painted the famous 1851 artwork titled Washington Crossing the Delaware.

Leutze was a German-American artist who created the painting to evoke the ideals of the American Revolution. The scene depicts General George Washington leading a nighttime crossing of the Delaware River on December 25–26, 1776, shortly before the Continental Army’s victory at Trenton.

The image is dramatic and symbolic rather than a precise record of the crossing. The boat’s passengers represent a range of people, and the composition emphasizes Washington’s leadership and the revolutionary cause. Leutze used contemporary models and artistic choices to connect the American Revolution with the European democratic movements of his own era.

Leutze produced three paintings with the same title in 1851. The best-known version is displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Another version was destroyed during World War II, while a third is held by the Minnesota Marine Art Museum.
