Who ordered the creation of Pandora in Hesiod’s Greek myth?

The story behind the answer

Zeus ordered the creation of Pandora in Hesiod’s Greek myth. He commands the gods to make her as part of his punishment of humanity after Prometheus gives humans fire.

The story presents Pandora as a coordinated divine creation rather than as the child of a single god. Hephaestus forms her from earth, and several other deities contribute abilities, clothing, ornaments, or character traits. Zeus then sends her to Epimetheus, Prometheus’s brother.

This episode belongs to a larger conflict between Zeus and Prometheus. Prometheus’s theft of fire benefits humanity, but Zeus treats the act as a challenge to divine authority. Pandora becomes one element of the resulting punishment, alongside the burdens that define human life in Hesiod’s account.

Later retellings often focus on Pandora’s action and reduce Zeus’s role to the background. In the ancient narrative, however, Zeus is the planner who initiates the episode and determines its purpose within the conflict between gods and humans.
