Who managed baseball's 1969 "Miracle Mets"?

Gil Hodges managed baseball’s 1969 “Miracle Mets.” In his second season as New York’s manager, Hodges guided a team that had never previously won more than 66 games to a 100–62 record, the National League East title, and the franchise’s first World Series championship.

The Mets defeated the Atlanta Braves in the first National League Championship Series, then beat the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles four games to one in the World Series. Hodges’ roster relied on outstanding pitching from Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman, strong defense, and a platoon system that matched players to favorable situations.

Hodges had been a respected first baseman for the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers before managing the Washington Senators and returning to New York. He managed the Mets from 1968 through 1971. The 1969 title made him a New York baseball legend, and he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame as a player in 2022.
