Wilbur and Orville Wright were American bicycle manufacturers who developed controlled, powered aircraft through systematic experiments. On 17 December 1903, Orville piloted the first flight of the Wright Flyer at Kill Devil Hills near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The flight lasted 12 seconds and covered about 36.5 metres.

The brothers completed four flights that day, taking turns as pilots. Wilbur made the longest, covering 260 metres in 59 seconds. Their achievement depended on more than an engine: they developed a practical system for controlling roll, pitch, and yaw, allowing the aircraft to be steered.

Other inventors, including Samuel Langley, had attempted powered flight, and earlier glider pioneers contributed important ideas. The Wright brothers’ distinction rests on combining sustained powered flight with effective three-axis control.
