Who led the first congregational Tarawih prayer under Caliph Umar?

Ubayy ibn Ka'b led the first unified congregational Tarawih prayer arranged under Caliph Umar.

During Muhammad's lifetime, Ramadan night prayer was sometimes performed in congregation, but he stopped leading it publicly after several nights because he feared Muslims might regard it as obligatory. After his death, people generally prayed in separate groups or individually.

Umar later saw the divided arrangements in the mosque and gathered worshippers behind one imam. Reports name Ubayy ibn Ka'b as the principal leader, with Tamim al-Dari also associated with leading the men. Ubayy was especially suited to the role: he was an Ansari companion, a respected Qur'an reciter, and one of the scribes connected with the early Muslim community.

A common mix-up concerns the number of prayer units. Accounts differ between eleven, twenty, and other totals because reports count Tarawih and Witr differently and reflect varying early practices. That numerical debate does not change Ubayy's identification as Umar's appointed leader.
