Who is widely credited with designing the Eiffel Tower in Paris?
Answer
Gustave Eiffel
Answer
Gustave Eiffel
Gustave Eiffel is widely credited with designing the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
The tower was created for the 1889 Exposition Universelle, a world's fair marking the centenary of the French Revolution. Eiffel's engineering company submitted the winning plan for a 300-metre iron tower, and construction took place between 1887 and 1889.
Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier developed the original technical concept, while architect Stephen Sauvestre refined its appearance. Gustave Eiffel supported and promoted the project, so the completed landmark became associated with his name. This is why answers naming only Eiffel's collaborators are usually considered incomplete.
The tower was initially intended to be temporary, but its usefulness as a radio and telecommunications structure helped preserve it. It remains one of the world's most recognizable landmarks.
