Who is Warren Buffett's long-time business partner and vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway?

The story behind the answer

Warren Buffett’s long-time business partner and Berkshire Hathaway vice chairman was Charlie Munger.

Munger and Buffett became one of business history’s best-known investing partnerships. Munger joined Berkshire Hathaway as vice chairman in 1978 and helped shape its preference for acquiring excellent businesses at sensible prices, rather than focusing only on deeply discounted stocks. Buffett often credited Munger with broadening his investment thinking beyond the strictest version of Benjamin Graham’s methods.

Munger served as Berkshire’s vice chairman until his death on November 28, 2023, so “was” is technically more precise than “is” today. Nevertheless, Charlie Munger is the canonical answer to this historical trivia question. He was also chairman of Wesco Financial and a director of Costco Wholesale.

Benjamin Graham was Buffett’s mentor, not his Berkshire vice chairman; Peter Lynch was a separate investment manager, and Bill Gates was a friend and foundation collaborator.
