Who is the wizard that organizes the quest?

The story behind the answer

Who is the wizard that organizes the quest? Gandalf organizes the quest in The Hobbit.

Gandalf the Grey brings the Dwarves’ plan to Bilbo Baggins’s doorstep by arranging the unexpected party at Bag End. He believes Bilbo’s quiet Hobbit nature hides qualities useful for the expedition, particularly stealth, courage, and practical judgment. Gandalf recommends him as the company’s burglar.

The quest is led politically by Thorin Oakenshield, heir to Erebor, but Gandalf is its principal organizer and catalyst. He understands that Thorin’s small company cannot simply attack Smaug, so he encourages a mission based on secrecy and infiltration. Gandalf also guides the travellers through dangers involving Trolls, Goblins, and the Wood-elves.

Readers sometimes confuse Gandalf’s role with that of Elrond, who provides information and hospitality at Rivendell, or Saruman, who leads the White Council. Radagast is another wizard, but he does not organize Thorin’s expedition. Gandalf’s interventions repeatedly keep the quest alive, even when he temporarily leaves the company.
