Who is the wife of Odin?

The story behind the answer

The wife of Odin is Frigg, the prominent Æsir goddess associated with marriage, motherhood, prophecy, and clairvoyance.

In Norse sources, Frigg lives in Fensalir and is repeatedly identified as Odin’s wife. Their son Baldr is one of the most important figures in stories about the gods. After Baldr’s death, Frigg tries to secure his return from Hel, making her grief central to the myth’s emotional arc.

Frigg is sometimes confused with Freyja because both are powerful goddesses linked with love, magic, and female authority. They are distinct figures in the surviving mythology, although later scholarship has debated whether some traditions once treated them as related or overlapping. Frigg is also not the same as Jörð, the earth goddess and mother of Thor.

Her name survives in the English word “Friday,” traditionally interpreted as “Frigg’s day.” The Prose Edda and Poetic Edda provide the main surviving accounts of her relationship with Odin.
