Who is the only male player to win the US Open on three different surfaces?

Jimmy Connors is the only male player to win the US Open on three different surfaces. Connors won his first US Open title in 1974, when the tournament was played on grass. He captured the championship again in 1976 on clay, then completed the surface sequence in 1978 on hard court.

The 1978 tournament was especially significant because it was the first US Open held at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York, and the first edition played on hard courts. Connors defeated Björn Borg in the final, winning in straight sets.

This achievement is sometimes confused with winning Grand Slam titles on three surfaces generally. Connors also did that, claiming Wimbledon on grass in 1974, the US Open on clay in 1976, and the US Open on hard court in 1978. The US Open's unusual surface history made his record possible: the event used grass until 1974, clay from 1975 through 1977, and hard court from 1978 onward.
