Who is the Norse goddess of the sea and wife of Ægir?

The story behind the answer

Rán is the Norse goddess and personification of the sea who is described as Ægir’s wife.

Rán is associated with the dangerous, death-bringing side of the ocean. Mythic tradition depicts her using a net to catch sailors, making “falling into Rán’s hands” or “going to Rán” a poetic way of describing drowning at sea.

Her husband Ægir is also linked with the sea, but his role is often more hospitable: he is famous for hosting the gods and brewing ale in his hall. Together, Rán and Ægir are said to have nine daughters who personify the waves.

Rán appears in the Poetic Edda, the Prose Edda, and later saga material. A frequent mistake is to treat Ægir simply as a conventional sea god; sources also describe him as a jötunn. Rán’s defining symbol is her net, which Loki is said to borrow in one legend.
