Who is the mother of Aragorn?

Aragorn’s mother is Gilraen, a woman of the Dúnedain who married Arathorn II and became the mother of Tolkien’s future king. Aragorn was born as Aragorn II, heir to Isildur’s line.

Gilraen came from the northern Dúnedain, the descendants of the Númenóreans who survived in Arnor after the kingdom’s decline. Her mother, Ivorwen, foresaw that Gilraen’s marriage to Arathorn could bring hope to their people. Aragorn was born in 2931 of the Third Age.

When Aragorn was only two years old, Arathorn was killed while pursuing Orcs. Gilraen then brought her son to Rivendell, where Elrond took responsibility for his upbringing. To protect him, Aragorn was renamed Estel, meaning “Hope,” and his royal ancestry was kept secret.

Arwen is not Aragorn’s mother; she is his future wife. Elrond is Arwen’s father and Aragorn’s foster father, making the family relationships easy to confuse.
