Who is the main antagonist in The Magician's Nephew?

The story behind the answer

Jadis is the main antagonist in The Magician’s Nephew. She is introduced as the last Queen of Charn, a powerful ruler whose decision to use the Deplorable Word destroys every living thing in her world except herself.

Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer encounter Jadis after travelling to the ruined world of Charn through the Wood between the Worlds. Digory rings a bell in the royal palace, awakening Jadis from an enchanted sleep. Her arrogance and hunger for power quickly make her a danger to both the children and the worlds they visit.

Jadis follows Digory and Polly to Victorian London and later reaches the newly created Narnia. There, she steals an apple from the garden and gains immortality, setting up her later identity as the White Witch. In The Magician’s Nephew, she represents the destructive consequences of tyranny, pride, and the refusal to surrender power.

Uncle Andrew is an important catalyst because his magic enables the children’s travels, but he is not the principal villain. Tash belongs to the events of The Last Battle, while the Queen of Underland is the antagonist of The Silver Chair. Jadis is the only answer that fits this novel’s central conflict.
