Who is the king of the Wood-elves?

The story behind the answer

Who is the king of the Wood-elves? Thranduil is the king of the Wood-elves in The Hobbit’s woodland realm of Mirkwood.

In Tolkien’s novel, he is initially called simply the Elvenking. His personal name, Thranduil, appears in later Middle-earth writings, including The Lord of the Rings. He rules the Elves who live in the forest formerly known as Greenwood the Great, which became Mirkwood after the spread of the Necromancer’s influence.

Thranduil is a Sindarin Elf who became king after the death of his father, Oropher, during the War of the Last Alliance against Sauron. His underground halls in Mirkwood hold the Dwarves of Thorin’s Company prisoner after they refuse to explain their mission. Bilbo later helps the company escape in barrels.

Legolas is Thranduil’s son, not the king. Círdan rules the Grey Havens, while Elrond governs Rivendell. In The Hobbit film trilogy, Thranduil’s role is expanded and he is portrayed by Lee Pace, but the book’s Elvenking is the same character.
