Who is the housekeeper at Pemberley?

The story behind the answer

Mrs. Reynolds is the housekeeper at Pemberley. She manages the Darcy family’s great Derbyshire estate and is the servant who guides Elizabeth Bennet and her aunt and uncle through the house when they visit.

Mrs. Reynolds matters because her praise of Mr. Darcy helps Elizabeth reassess him. She describes Darcy as a kind and generous master, especially toward his tenants and servants. Elizabeth has previously heard damaging claims about Darcy from Wickham, so the housekeeper’s sincere testimony becomes one of several pieces of evidence that challenge Elizabeth’s first impressions.

Pemberley is Darcy’s principal estate and symbolizes the order, responsibility, and good judgment that Elizabeth gradually recognizes in him. Mrs. Reynolds is not simply a background servant: her viewpoint gives Elizabeth an independent account of Darcy’s character. Mrs. Hurst is Bingley’s sister, Mrs. Gardiner is Elizabeth’s aunt, and Mrs. Hill is the Bennet family’s housekeeper at Longbourn, so none is the Pemberley housekeeper.
