Who is the Greek goddess of magic and crossroads?

The story behind the answer

Who is the Greek goddess of magic and crossroads? Hecate.

Hecate is the Greek goddess associated with magic, witchcraft, crossroads, night, and liminal places—thresholds between one state or world and another. She is often shown carrying torches, keys, or serpents, and later art frequently presents her in a triple form facing three directions. These images reflect her role as a guardian of roads, doors, boundaries, and transitions.

Her earliest major literary appearance is in Hesiod’s Theogony, where she is honored as a powerful goddess with influence in heaven, earth, and sea. Over time, her chthonic associations grew stronger. Greek and Roman traditions connected her with ghosts, purification, the underworld, and the safe passage of travelers. She was also associated with guiding Persephone between the worlds of the living and the dead.

Hecate is sometimes confused with Artemis because both can be linked with the Moon and youthful female imagery. Medea and Circe are famous magical figures, but they are enchantresses or sorceresses, not the principal goddess of magic and crossroads. Her Roman epithet Trivia refers to three-way crossroads.
